Dorothy Howard is an information scientist and librarian/archivist. She is currently attending Pratt Institute for an M.S. in Library and Information Science (MLIS), and also has an M.A. in Communication from the University of California, San Diego.

Dorothy started a MoMA Archives Linked Open Data Fellowship in September, 2025. From 2013 to 2016, Dorothy worked as a Wikipedian in Residence at the Metropolitan New York Library Council and has twelve years of Wikipedia editing and community organizing experience. Dorothy has also worked as a grant writer, web manager, and teacher’s assistant. 

Dorothy’s work includes studies of the dynamics of knowledge production in sociotechnical systems, community governance design, campaign organizing, and linked open data. Dorothy employs multiple research methods including ethnography (grounded theory, participant observation, interviews), content analysis, and historical and archival research. Dorothy has published peer-reviewed research and case studies about digital governance and open technology, funded by the Ford Foundation, the National Science Foundation, the University of California, the Processing Foundation, and the Wikimedia Foundation.

Dorothy is also a cross-genre writer with publications that include essays, short stories, and texts accompanying art exhibitions and music releases. She is the author of the poetry chapbook Troll (Inpatient Press, 2015) and has published criticism/fiction in Vol. 1 Brooklyn, Canadian Art, Rhizome, DIS, The New Inquiry, and more. See writing.
